It appears that we will all have to carry our own hoses. Kerry will be bringing the subject up at the next committee meeting. The hose on the pontoon may have to be removed

Red Diesel Update

Last week, Government made an announcement regarding the outcomes of the consultation on Red Diesel. Key features of the new scheme for charging duty on marine diesel to be introduced by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) with effect from 1 November 2008 will be:

  • Private users can continue to use marked fuel (red diesel) provided they make a simple declaration to the supplier and pay the full duty rate for heavy oil;
  • Registered Dealers in Controlled Oils (RDCOs) will be responsible for declaring the duty collected to HMRC; and,
  • Fuel purchased for domestic use (i.e. not for propulsion of the craft) can continue to be supplied at the rebated rate.

Under the new scheme, HMRC envisage that boaters will 'self declare' whether they are a commercial or recreational vessel and recreational vessels will pay the full duty rate. Fuel used for heating purposes on board will continue to be sold at the rebated rate of duty and the retailer will take the owners word, again based on self declaration, on what proportion is for heating or lighting and what is for propulsion.

Navigation – Awareness of Other Users

There have been recent occurrences on the water that have involved different types of vessels, some belonging to the Harbour Authority and other private owners. It is appropriate to emphasise the need for caution when navigating close to other users and always obey the Rules of the Road.

Please see attached for three recommendations from Roger Thorney, Acting Harbour Master

Disposal of Flares

The question of what to do with those out of date flares is one which faces all boat owners from time to time.

They must NOT be used for any other reason/occasion than to signal distress at sea.

Under no circumstances should they be dropped overboard, buried or put in the rubbish bin.

Using a flare other than for a genuine emergency is a very serious matter and can put all the emergency services to a great deal of unnecessary work, risk and expense. All flare sightings are treated as genuine until proved otherwise. There is NO TIME when marine flares can be used other than for the purpose for which they were made.

To dispose of them properly, take them to any Coastguard Station and they will arrange for their safe and proper disposal. Please ring beforehand if you are traveling any distance to ensure the Coastguard Station will be open. The link here will help you to locate your nearest Coastguard Station http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/mcga-home.htm

Geoff Sargent Web Pages

Geoff has compiled a new navigational web site.

He has spent a lot of time compiling navigational spread sheets to:

  • Get tidal streams from tidal diamond information
  • Work out secondary port tides
  • Find a course to steer

All these sheets are fully operational providing you have an up to date copy of excel, and are free to download. The site can be found at: http://www.tidalstreams.net/index.htm

BCYA

Take a look at what's happening at all the other clubs up the channel as well as our own in the Bristol Channel Events page. This has been designed as a notice board for all the open events happening in the channel. A good chance for members from various clubs to get together whenever possible. The events page can also be accessed through the CYC drop down menu.
